What is CLP?
CLP is the first real alternative to traditional law firms for complex legal work. We exist to empower our clients and our attorneys by changing the way they work together. Our founding idea was to strip away all of the unnecessary overhead and inefficiency one typically associates with BigLaw, creating a firm of experienced lawyers uniquely integrated with our clients.
|
Does CLP provide malpractice?
Yes, we provide malpractice insurance for our attorneys. We're happy to give details if it's requested.
|
Does CLP partner with outside counsel?
Sometimes... this typically happens on major transactions or litigations, where our client brings in CLP to manage their outside counsel or support their in-house team.
|
Do clients engage teams of CLP Attorneys?
Yes – we've tackled everything from complex regulatory applications to major project launches and corporate initiatives.
|
What kind of work does CLP do?
Clients retain us for high-end legal work - work that requires a talented attorney but not necessarily the infrastructure of a large law firm. Things like negotiating complex contracts, supporting new and existing lines of business, counseling on employment laws, managing litigation, preparing seasonal securities filings, negotiating strategic transactions, reviewing intellectual property portfolios and setting compliance programs... pretty much anything our clients would do in-house if they had the right resources.
|
What practice areas do you specialize in?
While CLP Attorneys have a wide range of skills, our principal practice areas are: Technology Licensing and Transactions; Intellectual Property; Commercial Contracts; Reporting/Compliance; Corporate/M&A; Litigation/Regulatory; and Employment Law. Within these practice areas, we're also organized by industry (Financial Services, Life Sciences, Media, etc.).

How does CLP work?
CLP works on an "engagement" basis. Based on the needs of the company, clients engage lawyers anywhere from one to five days per week and typically to work onsite. Though the average engagement lasts about eleven months, many continue for much longer. While we rarely take on an engagement predicted to last less than three months, we often work with clients on flexible work arrangements, including part-time and/or remote work.
|
Who are your attorneys and why do they join?
Because we're something new and different, we've been fortunate to attract attorneys with great credentials and experience. In fact, 73% of our attorneys come from a top 25 school, most have worked at a top law firm, and about one third have spent several years in-house before joining.
Attorneys join because they're looking for more control over their careers, diversity of work and a new way to practice.
|
Do attorneys have offices?
Not in the traditional sense. The majority of our attorneys work onsite with clients so their offices vary with each engagement, and the remainder work remotely.
|
What is CLP's billing structure?
Rather than following the traditional hourly paradigm, CLP typically bills in weekly blocks of time. This gives our clients more cost consistency and predictability and eliminates the dreaded "billable" hour which, in CLP's view, puts the client and the attorney's interests at odds. Our attorney rates are generally half the cost of a traditional firm.
|
How does CLP manage its engagements?
CLP employs Practice Managers whose sole focus is to ensure that each engagement goes smoothly. From the kick-off meeting to our "ten-minute" check-in, we try to make sure our clients are satisfied at a level that borders on disbelief.
